Pickleball net height: 36 inches at the posts, 34 in the middle

Pickleball net height is two numbers, not one: 36 inches at the sidelines and 34 inches at the centre. Everything else about the net follows from those, and the two-inch difference is not sag to be corrected — it is the specification.

How to measure it properly

Measure the centre first, because that is the number that drifts. Hold the tape at the centre strap, vertically, from the playing surface to the top of the tape. Thirty-four inches.

Then check a post. Thirty-six. If the centre is high, tighten the centre strap rather than dropping the whole net — lowering the posts to fix a sagging middle makes the whole net too low and changes every passing shot.

Portable nets are the usual offenders. Most of them ship with a centre support that is set correctly out of the box and then loosens over a season.

Why 34 in the middle

Most balls cross the net near the centre, and two inches there is a meaningful difference — it is roughly the margin on a good third shot drop. The dip makes the middle of the court slightly more attackable than the edges, which pushes play toward the angles and keeps rallies alive.

It also means a ball that clears the net at the post by an inch would not have cleared at the centre. Worth knowing when you are aiming down the line.

Pickleball net vs tennis net

Both are 36 inches at the posts. The difference is the middle: tennis specifies 36 inches at the centre, pickleball 34.

So if you are playing on a tennis court with the tennis net in place, the net is two inches too high exactly where you hit most of your shots. Drops that would land will catch the tape. It is playable for a casual game, and it is not the same game — anyone converting a tennis court for regular pickleball should drop a portable net over the top or fit a lower centre strap.

What a portable net gets wrong

Portable nets are how most backyard and driveway pickleball happens, and there are two things to check before you buy:

• Does the centre sit at 34 inches, or does the net just sag to whatever it sags to? A net with no centre support is not at spec, it is at gravity.
• Is it at least 21 ft 9 in wide? Plenty of cheap nets are 20 feet or less, which puts the posts inside the sidelines and makes every wide ball unplayable.

A net that is too narrow changes the game more than one that is slightly too high, because it removes the angles.

The net is live during play

Two rules people forget:

• Touching the net, the posts, or the centre strap with your paddle, body or clothing while the ball is live is a fault — even if the point was already over.
• Reaching over the net to hit a ball is a fault, but following through over the net after legal contact on your own side is fine.

The one exception: if a ball bounces back over the net on your side due to spin or wind, you may reach over to play it, as long as you do not touch the net.
